2nd Missionary Journey written between 50-52

BackgroundI Thessalonians (Acts 16)

Outline
Chapters 1-3 Emphasis is on staying strong amidst persecution as a reminder of the “coming of the Lord.” Chapter 4:1-12 is instruction on fleeing immorality. Chapter 4:13-18, 5:1-11 talks about the “day / coming of the Lord,” being “caught up,” “thief in the night.” Chapter 5:12-28 final thoughts.

1 Thessalonians 1:1 - 5:28 1:1 Paul and Silvanus and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.  2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention of you in our prayers;  3 constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father,  4 knowing, brethren beloved by God, His choice of you;  5 for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.  6 You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit,  7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.  8 For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything.  9 For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God,  10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.

1 Thessalonians 2:1 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain,  2 but after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition.  3 For our exhortation does not come from error or impurity or by way of deceit;  4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men but God, who examines our hearts.  5 For we never came with flattering speech, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed-- God is witness--  6 nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, even though as apostles of Christ we might have asserted our authority.  7 But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children.  8 Having thus a fond affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us.  9 For you recall, brethren, our labor and hardship, how working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.  10 You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers;  11 just as you know how we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own children,  12 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.  13 And for this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of God's message, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.  14 For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews,  15 who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God, but hostile to all men,  16 hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved; with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the utmost.  17 But we, brethren, having been bereft of you for a short while-- in person, not in spirit-- were all the more eager with great desire to see your face.  18 For we wanted to come to you-- I, Paul, more than once-- and yet Satan thwarted us.  19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation? Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?  20 For you are our glory and joy.

1 Thessalonians 3:1Therefore when we could endure it no longer, we thought it best to be left behind at Athens alone;  2 and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you as to your faith,  3 so that no man may be disturbed by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we have been destined for this.  4 For indeed when we were with you, we kept telling you in advance that we were going to suffer affliction; and so it came to pass, as you know.  5 For this reason, when I could endure it no longer, I also sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter might have tempted you, and our labor should be in vain.  6 But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always think kindly of us, longing to see us just as we also long to see you,  7 for this reason, brethren, in all our distress and affliction we were comforted about you through your faith;  8 for now we really live, if you stand firm in the Lord.  9 For what thanks can we render to God for you in return for all the joy with which we rejoice before our God on your account,  10 as we night and day keep praying most earnestly that we may see your face, and may complete what is lacking in your faith?  11 Now may our God and Father Himself and Jesus our Lord direct our way to you;  12 and may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another, and for all men, just as we also do for you;  13 so that He may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints.

1 Thessalonians 4:1Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you may excel still more.  2 For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.  3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;  4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,  5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;  6 and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you.  7 For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification.  8 Consequently, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you.  9 Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another;  10 for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to excel still more,  11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you;  12 so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.

13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope.  14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.  15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, and remain until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep.  16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first.  17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we shall always be with the Lord.  18 Therefore comfort one another with these words

1 Thessalonians 5:1Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you.  2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.  3 While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like birth pangs upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.  4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief;  5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness;  6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.  7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.  8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation

9 For God has not destined us for wrath, (1:10) but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,  10 who died for us, that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him.  11 Therefore encourage one another, and build up one another, just as you also are doing.  12 But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction,  13 and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another.  14 And we urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all men.  15 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all men.  16 Rejoice always;  17 pray without ceasing;  18 in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.  19 Do not quench the Spirit;  20 do not despise prophetic utterances.  21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;  22 abstain from every form of evil.  23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.  25 Brethren, pray for us.  26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.  27 I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren.  28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Background II Thessalonians

Outline
In Chapter one again Paul encourages them to stay strong amidst persecution. Chapter 2 talks further about the “day of the Lord” and that it will be preceded with a great falling away and the “man of sin / son of perdition” be revealed trying to show himself to be God and the “mystery of iniquity.” Chapter 3:1-5 pray for us that we may be able to share the Gospel. Chapter 3:6-18 warns them against having fellowship with the ungodly.

Paul obviously anticipated a catastrophic event that would occur soon called the “coming or day of the Lord”.
Issues to discuss what does the Bible mean when it uses the following terms:
Thief in the Night, Day of the Lord, Coming of the Lord - Parousia
Last Days, End Times, Caught Up – “Rapture” In the Clouds

2 Thessalonians   1 Paul and Silvanus and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:  2 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  3 We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater;  4 therefore, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure.  5 This is a plain indication of God's righteous judgment so that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering.
6 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,  7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire,  8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.  9 And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,  10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed-- for our testimony to you was believed.  11 To this end also we pray for you always that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power;  12 in order that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2:1 Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming / parousia of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to Him,  2 that you may not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.  3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy (falling away from the faith) comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,  4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.  5 Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things?  6 And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he may be revealed.  7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way.
8 And then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming;  9 that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders,  10 and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved.  11 And for this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they might believe what is false,  12 in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.
13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.  14 And it was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.  15 So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.  16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace,  17 comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

3:1 Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you;  2 and that we may be delivered from perverse and evil men; for not all have faith.  3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.  4 And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will continue to do what we command.  5 And may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.  6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep aloof from every brother who leads an unruly life and not according to the tradition which you received from us.  7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example, because we did not act in an undisciplined manner among you,  8 nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but with labor and hardship we kept working night and day so that we might not be a burden to any of you;  9 not because we do not have the right to this, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you, that you might follow our example.  10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone will not work, neither let him eat.
11 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies.  12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.  13 But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary of doing good.  14 And if anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of that man and do not associate with him, so that he may be put to shame.  15 And yet do not regard him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.  16 Now may the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance. The Lord be with you all!  17 I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand, and this is a distinguishing mark in every letter; this is the way I write.  18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

What is the Day and Coming of the Lord?  They are terms used synonymously.  It is a day of judgment and retribution.  It is not referring to the coming or return of Jesus.

7 Therefore all hands will fall limp, and every man's heart will melt.

James 5:7-8 Be patient, therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.  8 You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

I Thes. 1:10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come
I Thes. 4 13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve, as do the rest who have no hope.  14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring /  lead with Him those who have fallen asleep / died in Jesus.  15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, (directly from Him) that we who are alive, and remain until the coming / Parousia of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep.  16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout / command, with the voice of the archangel (Michael Jude 1:9), and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first.  17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up / Harpazo-taken together / at the same time with them in the (a) cloud (s) to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we shall always be with the Lord.  18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.  (Compare I Cor.15:51-54)

1 Corinthians 15:51-54 Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,  52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.  53 For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.  54 But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "Death is swallowed up in victory.

1 Thessalonians 5 1 Now as to the times and the epochs / seasons, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you.  2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.  3 While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like birth pangs upon a woman with child; (Mat.24:8) and they shall not escape (compare with II Thes.1:6, 2:1).  4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief;  5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; (compare Mat.24:37-44, II Pet.3:10-12),  6 so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.  7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.  8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation
9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him.

II Thes. 1 6 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire,  8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

The Olivet Discourse - compare Mark 13, Luke 21
Matthew 24  1 And Jesus came out from the temple and was going away when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him.  2 And He answered and said to them, Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here shall be left upon another, which will not be torn down. (Occurred in 70AD)
3 And as He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?  4 And Jesus answered and said to them, See to it that no one misleads you.
5 For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many.
6 And you will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.
7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and
in various places there will be famines and earthquakes.  8 "But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs. (I Thes.5:3)
9 Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations on account of My name.
10 And at that time many will fall away and will deliver up one another and hate one another.
11 And many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many.
12 And because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold.
13 But the one who endures to the end, he shall be saved.  14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a witness to all the nations, and then the end shall come
15 Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand Dan. 11:31, 12:11),
16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains;  17 let him who is on the housetop not go down to get the things out that are in his house;  18 and let him who is in the field not turn back to get his cloak.  19 "But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse babes in those days!  20 But pray that your flight may not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath;  21 for then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall.  22 And unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days shall be cut short.
23 Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or 'There He is,' do not believe him.  24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.  25 Behold, I have told you in advance.  26 If therefore they say to you, 'Behold, He is in the wilderness,' do not go forth, or, 'Behold, He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe them
27 For just as the lightning comes from the east, and flashes even to the west, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.  28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.
29 But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken, (Joel 2:31, Acts 2:20,  Revelation 6:12)
30 and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.  31 And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.
32 Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender, and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near;  33 even so you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door.  34 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.  35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words shall not pass away.
36 But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.    37 For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.  38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, they were marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,  39 and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.  40 Then there shall be two men in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left.  41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left.  42 Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.  43 But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.  44 "For this reason you be ready too; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will

Who or what is the “man of lawlessnes?”  Is this who or what is referred to as the “anti-christ?”  The term “anti-christ” is only used in (I John 2:18, 22, 4:3, II John 1:7) and does NOT refer to a single person.   The term is NOT used or referred to in the Book of Revelation.  People have associated the term with the “false prophet and the beast.”

II Thes. 2 1 Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming / parousia of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to Him,  2 that you may not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.  3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy (falling away from the faith) comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,  4 who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, (in Jerusalem) displaying himself as being God.  (Dan. 11:31, 12:11, Mat.24:15)

Background I Corinthians (Acts 18-20)

Outline
Corinth was one of the richest cities as well as one of the most immoral. Various heathen religions and the occult flourished there. One of the most prominent was the temple to Aphrodite the goddess of love and beauty. Within the pagan temples were prostitutes. There was a struggle when pagans converted to Christianity and still had a hard time separating themselves from culturally pagan customs, dress and practices, even how they conducted themselves in the pagan temples verses worship in the church, views on sexuality and immoral practices, how they resolved disputes, eating meat sacrificed to idols. As a result there were many divisions among the churches. Paul teaches about being the “temple of the Holy Sprit,” (ch.3, 6) the “Lord’s Supper,” (ch.10, 11) being the “Body of Christ,” and “spiritual gifts,” (ch.12, 14) “Love,” (ch.13) and the “resurrection of the dead” (ch.15). Chapter 16 closes with instructions on how to gather collections given for the ministry. Paul speaks of what his future plans are.

Was written from Ephesus (1 Corinthians 16:8) about the time of the Passover in the third year of the apostle's sojourn there (Acts 19:1020:31), and when he had formed the purpose to visit Macedonia, and then return to Corinth (probably A.D. 57). The news which had reached him, however, from Corinth frustrated his plan. He had heard of the abuses and contentions that had arisen among them, first from Apollos (Acts 19:1), and then from a letter they had written him on the subject, and also from some of the "household of Chloe," and from Stephanas and his two friends who had visited him (1 Corinthians 1:1116:17). Paul wrote this letter, for the purpose of checking the divisive spirit and correcting the erroneous opinions that had sprung up among them, and remedying the many abuses and disorderly practices that prevailed. Titus and a brother whose name is not given were probably the bearers of the letter (2 Corinthians 2:138:6, 16-18).

1 Corinthians 1:1 Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,  2 to the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:  3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 I thank my God always concerning you, for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus,  5 that in everything you were enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowledge,  6 even as the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed in you,  7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ,  8 who shall also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.  9 God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree, and there be no divisions among you, but you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.  11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe's people, that there are quarrels among you.  12 Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ."  13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?  14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,  15 that no man should say you were baptized in my name.  16 Now I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any other.  17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, that the cross of Christ should not be made void.  18 For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  19 For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside."  20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?  21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
22 For indeed Jews ask for signs, and Greeks search for wisdom;  23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles foolishness,  24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.  26 For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;  27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,  28 and the base things of the world and the despised, God has chosen, the things that are not, that He might nullify the things that are,  29 that no man should boast before God.  30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,  31 that, just as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord."

1 Corinthians 2:1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.  2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.  3 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling.  4 And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.  6 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away;  7 but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God predestined before the ages to our glory;  8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;  9 but just as it is written, "Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him."
10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.  11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.  12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God,  13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.  14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.  15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no man.  16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ

1 Corinthians 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to babes in Christ.  2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?  4 For when one says, "I am of Paul," and another, "I am of Apollos," are you not mere men?  5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one.  6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth.  7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.  8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.  10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But let each man be careful how he builds upon it.  11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.  12 Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,  13 each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.  14 If any man's work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward.  15 If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire.
16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?  17 If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.  18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become foolish that he may become wise.  19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, "He is the one who catches the wise in their craftiness";  20 and again, "The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are useless."  21 So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you,  22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you,  23 and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God.

1 Corinthians 4:1 Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.  2 In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy.  3 But to me it is a very small thing that I should be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself.  4 For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord.  5 Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God
6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that in us you might learn not to exceed what is written, in order that no one of you might become arrogant in behalf of one against the other.  7 For who regards you as superior? And what do you have that you did not receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?  8 You are already filled, you have already become rich, you have become kings without us; and I would indeed that you had become kings so that we also might reign with you.  9 For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men
10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are prudent in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are distinguished, but we are without honor.  11 To this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed, and are roughly treated, and are homeless;  12 and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure;  13 when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.  14 I do not write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children.  15 For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.  16 I exhort you therefore, be imitators of me.  17 For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, just as I teach everywhere in every church.
18 Now some have become arrogant, as though I were not coming to you.  19 But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I shall find out, not the words of those who are arrogant, but their power.  20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in words, but in power.  21 What do you desire? Shall I come to you with a rod or with love and a spirit of gentleness?

Judging Conduct in the Church

1 Corinthians 5:1 It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father's wife.  2 And you have become arrogant, and have not mourned instead, in order that the one who had done this deed might be removed from your midst.  3 For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present.  4 In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus,  5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus
6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?  7 Clean out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. (Leaven was a symbol for sin.) For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.  8 Let us therefore celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth
9 I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people;  10 I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters; for then you would have to go out of the world.  11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he should be an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler-- not even to eat with such a one.  12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church?  13 But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves

1 Corinthians 6:1 Does any one of you, when he has a case against his neighbor, dare to go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints?  2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you not competent to constitute the smallest law courts?  3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, matters of this life?  4 If then you have law courts dealing with matters of this life, do you appoint them as judges who are of no account in the church?  5 I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not among you one wise man who will be able to decide between his brethren,  6 but brother goes to law with brother, and that before unbelievers?  7 Actually, then, it is already a defeat for you, that you have lawsuits with one another. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded?  8 On the contrary, you yourselves wrong and defraud, and that your brethren.
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,  10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  11 And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.
12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.  13 Food is for the stomach, and the stomach is for food; but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord; and the Lord is for the body
14 Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power.  15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? May it never be!  16 Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a harlot is one body with her? For He says, "The two will become one flesh."  17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him
18 Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.  19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?  20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body

1 Corinthians 7:1 Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman.  2 But because of immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.  3 Let the husband fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband.  4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.  5 Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again lest Satan tempt you because of your lack of self-control.  6 But this I say by way of concession, not of command.  7 Yet I wish that all men were even as I myself am (Paul was unmarried.). However, each man has his own “gift” from God, one in this manner, and another in that.  8 But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I.  9 But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn.  10 But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband  11 but if she does leave, let her remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband, and that the husband should not send his wife away.
12 But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, let him not send her away.  13 And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, let her not send her husband away.  14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy.  15 Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.  16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?  17 Only, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has “called” each, in this manner let him walk. And thus I direct in all the churches.
18 Was any man called already circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. Has anyone been called in uncircumcision? Let him not be circumcised.  19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God.  20 Let each man remain in that condition in which he was called.  21 Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that.  22 For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord's freedman; likewise he who was called while free, is Christ's slave.  23 You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.  24 Brethren, let each man remain with God in that condition in which he was called.
25 Now concerning  a women who has never been married I have no command of the Lord, but I give an opinion as one who by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy.  26 I think then that this is good in view of the present distress, that it is good for a man to remain as he is.  27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife.  28 But if you should marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin should marry, she has not sinned. Yet such will have trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you.  29 But this I say, brethren, the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none;  30 and those who weep, as though they did not weep; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess;  31 and those who use the world, as though they did not make full use of it; for the form of this world is passing away.  32 But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord;  33 but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife,  34 and his interests are divided. And the woman who is unmarried, and the never married, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband.  35 And this I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is seemly, and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord.  36 But if any man thinks that he is acting unbecomingly toward his unmarried daughter, if she should be of full age, and if it must be so, let him do what he wishes, he does not sin; let her marry.  37 But he who stands firm in his heart, being under no constraint, but has authority over his own will, and has decided this in his own heart, to keep his own unmarried daughter, he will do well.  38 So then both he who gives his own unmarried daughter in marriage does well, and he who does not give her in marriage will do better.  39 A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.  40 But in my opinion she is happier if she remains as she is; and I think that I also have the Spirit of God.

Pagan Practices and Christianity
1 Corinthians 8:1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies. 2 If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; 3 but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him.  4 Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one.  5 For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords,  6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.  7 However not all men have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.  But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat.  9 But take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak / young converts in the Faith.  10 For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols?  11 For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died.  12 And thus, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.  13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, that I might not cause my brother to stumble.
Compensation for those in Ministry
1 Corinthians 9:1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?  2 If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.  3 My defense to those who examine me is this:  4 Do we not have a right to eat and drink?  5 Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?  6 Or do only Barnabas and I not have a right to refrain from working?  7 Who at any time serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and does not eat the fruit of it? Or who tends a flock and does not use the milk of the flock?  8 I am not speaking these things according to human judgment, am I? Or does not the Law also say these things?  9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing." God is not concerned about oxen, is He?  10 Or is He speaking altogether for our sake? Yes, for our sake it was written, because the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of sharing the crops.  11 If we sowed spiritual things in you, is it too much if we should reap material things from you?  12 If others share the right over you, do we not more? Nevertheless, we did not use this right, but we endure all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ.  13 Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share with the altar?  14 So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.  15 But I have used none of these things.
And I am not writing these things that it may be done so in my case; for it would be better for me to die than have any man make my boast an empty one.  16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for I am under compulsion; for woe is me if I do not preach the gospel.  17 For if I do this voluntarily, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have a stewardship entrusted to me.  18 What then is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may offer the gospel without charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.  19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more.  20 And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law, though not being myself under the Law, that I might win those who are under the Law;  21 to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, that I might win those who are without law.  22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some
23 And I do all things for the sake of the gospel, that I may become a fellow partaker of it.  24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.  25 And everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.  26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air;  27 but I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.

Facing Decisions about Pagan Practices
1 Corinthians 10:1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;  2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;  3 and all ate the same spiritual food;  4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.  5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.
6 Now these things happened as examples for us, that we should not crave evil things, as they also craved.  7 And do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play."  8 Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.  9 Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.  10 Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.  11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come
12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.  13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.  14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry
15 I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say.  16 Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?  17 Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.  18 Look at the nation Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar?  19 What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?  20 No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.  21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.  22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we?
23 All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.  24 Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.  25 Eat anything that is sold in the meat market, without asking questions for conscience ' sake;  26 for the earth is the Lord's, and all it contains.  27 If one of the unbelievers invites you, and you wish to go, eat anything that is set before you, without asking questions for conscience ' sake.  28 But if anyone should say to you, "This is meat sacrificed to idols," do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience' sake;  29 I mean not your own conscience, but the other man's; for why is my freedom judged by another's conscience?  30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks?  31 Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.  32 Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God;  33 just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.

1 Corinthians 11:1 Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.  2 Now I praise you because you remember me in everything, and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.  3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.  4 Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying, disgraces his head.  5 But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying, disgraces her head; for she is one and the same with her whose head is shaved.  6 For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head.  7 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.  8 For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man;  9 for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake
10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.  11 However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.  12 For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God
13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with head uncovered?  14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.  16 But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God.  17 But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse.
18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part, I believe it.  19 For there must also be factions among you, in order that those who are approved may have become evident among you.  20 Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper,  21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk.  22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God, and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you.
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;  24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me."  25 In the same way He took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."  26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes
27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.  28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.  29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself, if he does not judge the body rightly.  30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.
31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we should not be judged.  32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord in order that we may not be condemned along with the world.  33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.  34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you may not come together for judgment. And the remaining matters I shall arrange when I come.

Background Romans (Acts 20)

Outline
Written to a primarily gentile audience concerning the basics of Christianity. He presents the idea that “salvation is to the Jews first and then to the gentile.” His premise is that the things of God are “self-evident” and that people “exchanged the truth of God for a lie,” thus making them immoral. He states that a “true Jew” is one who is one inwardly and has a “circumcised heart” not just outward appearance, but there is advantage to being a Jew in understanding the Gospel. But it is faith in action and not just knowing the Law that saves. Abraham was justified by faith before he was circumcised (ch.4). Chapter 5 talks about the origin of sin through the first Man Adam and salvation through the second man Jesus through God’s grace. So should we continue in sin? (ch. 6). No!!  Chapter 6 speaks about what baptism represents.
Chapter 7 is talking to Jews who know the Law and compares its authority over them as a husband over a wife. Since Christ represents the husband, or the law, upon His death the wife is no longer under his authority, but because Christ is raised they are married to a new husband, namely Christ and now under a new covenant.
Chapter 8 we have received the “Spirit of Adoption” and are “heirs and joint-heirs together with Christ”. Our full adoption as sons is yet to come and all of creation awaits. We have received the earnest of the Spirit who confirms our full-adoption and intercedes on our behalf. “all things work together for the good,” “if God be for us,” “nothing can separate us from the love of God,” “we are more than conquers.”
In chapters 9-11 Paul talks much about the salvation of the Jews and their relationship to gentile believers as being “grafted in.” Chapter 12 “present your bodies as living sacrifices, ” for service. Chapter 13 speaks of being subject to authorities over you. Chapter 14 speaks of the issues of those regarding different holy days and different food laws and how not to be too harsh in your judgment of them, but be careful not to contribute to placing "stumbling blocks" before new converts. Chapter 15 speaks of receiving gentile converts.
Chapter 16 closes with greetings and salutations from Paul.

Background Ephesians (Acts 18, 19)

Outline
Known for its temple to the goddess of fertility Diana (Artemis) which brought in great income. It was the chief banking establishment in Asia Minor. Uses the term “In Christ / In Him” when referring to our relationship to God and what we have received. Paul speaks of us as being a “purchased possession” and being “sealed with the Spirit” and receiving an “earnest of the Spirit”. Paul wants them to know the riches of what we have received through Jesus as His Church and Body. We are “God’s workmanship.” Paul reminds them that they were once considered to be “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel” and “strangers to the covenant of promise,” being without hope and without God. But now “the two have become One” and the “wall of separation has been broken down.” Together with Israel we are a “holy temple” of which Christ is the “chief cornerstone”.  Salvation to the Gentiles is a “mystery” not revealed until Christ.  For there is “One body, Spirit, hope, calling, Lord, faith, baptism, God and Father”. Talks about various offices that have been given to the church for the purpose of: “perfecting the saints for the work of the ministry and edifying the Body of Christ; until we all come into unity of faith and maturity.”  Paul also speaks of their conduct in that they should “put on the new man,” “be angry but sin not,” “do not give place to the devil,” and “grieve not the Spirit.”  Chapter 5 speaks of being “filled with the Spirit” so you will not fulfill the deeds of the flesh. Chapter 5 also speaks of the “One flesh union” between husband and wife as reflecting the “mystery” and type of union the Church has with Christ. Chapter 6 speaks of “putting on the whole armor of God.”

Background Philippians (Acts 16, 20)

Outline
The city was named for Philip the father of Alexander the Great. This city may not have had a synagogue because Paul met Lydia near a river, whose family later became the first believers in that area. Paul is writing again from prison and makes the statement “for to me to live is Christ and to die is gain”. Paul reflects on the humility of Christ and states that even though he was God He humbled Himself and took on the form of a servant and became obedient unto death on a cross. As a result God has exalted Him and His name above all names. In chapter 3 Paul gives his background as a righteous Jew, but states that he would gladly consider his lineage to be insignificant in comparison in order to win Christ. Paul’s final remarks are to “rejoice in the Lord always, to pray always so that the  peace of God that passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds, to think only on things that are true”, and reminds them that “we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us”. In chapter 4 He reminds them concerning their giving and states that “my God shall supply all your needs” in return.

Background Colossians

Outline
Paul never visited this church. He is writing to refute what he hears to be false teaching concerning Christ and Gnosticism as well as the relationship between Judaism and the believer. Paul speaks of the pre-existence and pre-eminence of Christ as God before all creation and through whom all things have come into being. Jesus is also the head of the Body the Church and the firstborn from the dead and through Him all fullness dwells and through His sacrifice all things have been reconciled to God. Paul speaks again of the “mystery” that is now revealed through the salvation of the gentiles.  In chapter 2 Paul again declares that “in Christ is the fullness of the Godhead in bodily form”. Christ is the “head of all principalities and powers”. We have been buried with Christ in baptism and raised with Him. God has removed the requirements and charges of the Law through His death on the cross. Christ has also made an “open display triumphing over all principalities and powers”. Chapter 3 begins with the conclusion, “so if we have now been raised with Christ, seek those things which are above” not things that are earthly which will be done away with.  So “put off the old man and put on the new man and let the peace of God rule your hearts and let the word of Christ dwell in you, and what so ever you do; do all in the Name of the Lord”.

Background I Timothy

Outline
Timothy is referred to in Acts 16:1 when Paul was traveling through Antioch, Iconium and Lystra. His mother was a Jewess and his father a Greek. He and his family were converts to Christianity. Timothy later becomes a disciple of Paul and traveled with him. He was also someone who visited various churches in Paul’s place, especially Ephesus. He was a young overseer of the church. Paul writes these “Pastoral Epistles” from his second imprisonment as his final instructions to Timothy before his death under Nero in Rome where Paul is beheaded as a Roman citizen.
Paul wrote to Timothy to give him advice about how to deal with false teachings. “Pray for those in authority.” “There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”. Paul makes comments about a woman’s conduct and role in the church. Chapter 3 talks about qualifications to be an overseer (bishop) or a deacon of the church. In 3:15 it states that the “Church is the Pillar and Ground of Truth.” Chapter 4 begins with Paul warning about signs of the “latter days” that there will be a falling away from the faith. Chapter 5 begins with instructions on how to deal with various people in the church. Chapter 6 gives further instruction on how to deal with various people and situations.

Outline
This letter has more of a sober tone because it is Paul’s last letter to Timothy. Paul is encouraging Timothy to not be timid and to endure hardships as a good soldier. He also tells him to diligently study the scriptures.
Chapter 3 talks about the “last days.” In 3:16 Paul states that "all scripture is given by inspiration of God." In chapter 4 Paul reflects on his ministry and encourages Timothy to teach sound doctrine and to do the work of an Evangelist. “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Background Titus
Titus was a gentile convert. He was with Paul from the beginning of his ministry and during the debate about circumcision of gentile believers. It was written during the time I Timothy was written. Titus needed advice on how to deal with those who still didn’t accept the authority of an uncircumcised gentile and how to handle false teaching. Paul also told him what qualifications leaders of the church should have and how believers should conduct themselves.
